Funny Welcome to Sunny Florida Review Once you get past the hair and the frock, Welcome to Sunny Florida is an enjoyable document of a typical Tori Amos performance—but I wouldn’t blame the star if, upon seeing the rushes, she fired her stylist. Those tangled tresses, looking as if she were halfway into the process of growing dreadlocks, don’t do Amos any favours, and her stage garb—a sundress that has somehow sprouted gauzy, multicoloured wings—makes her resemble a transvestite Rick Wakeman. Yikes!
For someone so gorgeous and so conscious of her beauty, Amos just doesn’t look very good here. But she sounds great, her spirits undampened by the hurricane weather that apparently greeted her arrival in West Palm Beach, Florida, where Welcome was shot.
The singer has always been a love-or-hate proposition, with an almost cultish core of devoted followers and a much larger number of people who are just plain irritated by her elastic phrasing, oblique lyrics, and pseudo-shamanic stage presence. If the latter can get over their preconceptions, however, they might find quite a lot to enjoy in the musical portion of this new DVD, with Amos’s charismatic performance backed only by the supple bass-and-drum pairing of Jon Evans and Matt Chamberlain.
Amos is quite mad, of course, but that’s one of the reasons we love her: in her otherworldly certainty she refuses to censor any of her creative impulses. The flip side of that is that many of her songs are gnomic riddles, their meaning known only to her, and this warts-and-all documentary sheds little light on her lyrics. But the stripped-down music is hard to resist, and true fans will appreciate the weird interviews, the backstage footage, and the bonus audio disc of six outtakes from the Scarlet’s Walk CD sessions.
