River God River God
Walking upstream in a
Dried up river bed
Silt and smooth stone
Crunching beneath my
Blue tennis shoes
To my left I hear the
Clumsy tromping
Of a native
We silently acknowledge
Each other, she
Continues foraging and I
Drift further into my fairy tale
Exposed roots express hard times
Hardened ground reveals the
Former residences
Of a crawdad family
I slowly lift my eyes
Looking from tree to tree
Then I see my River God
He is withering in the summer sun
His eyes still burn with the
Intensity of Spring
They’ve now yellowed, with his skin
His Lover always calls to him
She has run off—
Like Persephone
She will not return to him
Until Winter’s chill has
Frozen his heart and the tears in his eyes
He knows she’ll return to him
Her breathe will
Undo all the damage
Until then, he must wait
Silently hoping for rebirth
So I guess that is the prologue for the story.
