There are no victims, only volunteers...

There are no victims, only volunteers... hmm...i think that quote pisses me off a little bit. that's an interesting thought. i'm gonna go ponder that for a bit.

vehnillamasochist- 09-09-2005

I dunno how i feel abut that quote...Where did it come from ?

Mitholas- 09-09-2005

Bliss You're a thinker, you like do to things on your own...you've been wondering how much freedom of your own do you have, and -*test*-('")ing those boundries.

WOW! I can't believe that such a profoud quote could piss some one off. It's an old psychological quote basically meaning that if you hold on to the suffering that you're voluteering to be a victim, and who the hell wants to be a victim? Our goal is to triumph over our suffering. The only way to do that is to get over it, just GET OVER IT! It's a given that you need to go through the "normal" stages after a traumatic situation occurs to you but, if you hold on to it you're 'volunteering' to let it consume your life thus, you're no longer a victim you're a volunteer. Does it still piss you off? I think it's empowering, but I'm into psychology. If it does piss you off, I hope that we can agree to disagree. i go eat sushi now....

Make sense? Like I said, who wants to be a victim? Who wants to surrender to guilt? Guilt sucks! We all feel it from time to time but we are VOLUNTEERING to feel it. Yes? No? What do you think?

ok with the explanation i feel a little bit better about the quote and as such i actually agree with the quote. however, in its raw form "there are no victims, just volunteers" yeah it does upset me because you can't tell me that anyone who is victimized asks for it. maybe we don't protect ourselves like we should, but it doesn't mean it's what we want. but yes, once it happens, if we let it consume us until we are nothing but a shadow of who we were, yes we have volunteered ourselves for permanent victim status. when you allow yourself to obsess over your victimization, you allow the person that hurt you, domination over you which is what they wanted in the first place. i don't know sorry that's my two cents.

I agree 110%!!!! That's why I love the quote so much. It is raw and BLUNT but it motivates (me, whoever is a victim) to not volunteer themselves to STAY a victim. By doing so the person/event that harmed you takes over and wins, and that is unacceptable. I remember when I first heard this quote, I was offended. I felt like no one had the right to tell me not to hurt after being violated but, in actuality, it is doing the opposite. I guess it's like "tough love." PS ~ I really enjoyed the debate, really. It keeps me on my toes!

good. there is nothing wrong with a good debate just so long as the parties involved understand and respect one another that their opinions don't make them a less valid human in the other person's eyes.

Mary It seems everyone likes you. You have a strong personality and will, and are very independant. Sorry I can't get the picture to work. :D
